The Need For Rest and
Relaxation.
It was God who said: "work six days and then
rest a day." There is something about the way we are made that
desires rest and relaxation. Much of our behavior is designed to meet this
need. The husband who comes home, flips on the TV takes his shoes off, and
enjoys a Pepsi is trying to meet his need for relaxation. His wife may
complain that he should show her some attention before watching TV. Her
complaints are designed to meet one of her inner needs - the need for
love. Both of their needs are legitimate. The key is learning how to meet
these needs in a wholesome way.
What if he agrees to first give her a hug, tell her
that he loves her and says, I'm looking forward to talking with you after
dinner. Then goes to the TV and the Pepsi. She has had a dash of love and
the promise of more. He is free to relax and unwind from a stressful day
without her condemnation. Both are happy and the relationship is
supportive, because both accept the validity of the inner need for love
and relaxation. Together they have found a way to meet these inner needs.
This is one of the keys to a successful marriage.
