A
Compliment is a Great Motivator.
A lady once said to me,
"Dr. Chapman, How can I get my
husband to paint our bedroom. I
have been after him for nine months.
I've asked kindly. I've asked with
tears. I've offered to pay him. I
don't know what else to do. Two
questions: Are you certain that your
husband knows you want the bedroom painted?
"I know he does. I have made
that abundantly clear."
Second question: "Does your
husband ever do anything good? "Like
what, she asked? Does he ever wash
the dishes, take out the garbage,
mow the grass, wash the car, anything
like that? "Oh yes," she said.
"He does some of those things."
Then I have two suggestions:
1. Don't ever again ask him to
paint the bedroom. He already knows you
want it painted. 2. The next time
he does anything good, give him a
compliment. You know, "I really appreciate
your taking out the garbage." Three
weeks later she came back and said:
"It worked."
You can't make a man paint
a bedroom. But a compliment is a far greater
motivator than an nag.
