Encouraging vs. Nagging.
There is a difference between
encouraging words and nagging words. Encouraging
words always focus on something your spouse
wants to do, not something you want
them to do. Some husbands say: "I'm
encouraging my wife to loose weight."
Which being interpreted is: "I'm
preaching to my wife about her need
to loose weight." That is not
encouragement it's a nag. A nag is anything
you tell your spouse more than three
times.
The first is information: "I
would like for you to loose weight."
The second we figure that maybe she
was asleep the first time. The third
we just throw in for good measure,
but the fourth is a nag. Let me suggest
a better approach. Tell her three things
you like about her and then tell
her one thing you wish she would
change. Then back off and never mention
it again.
When she expresses a desire to
loose weight. You say: "I'll tell
you one thing. If you choose to
enroll in the program. You will be
a success. That's one thing I admire about
you. If you decide to do something,
you do it." Those are encouraging
words.
