"Teammates" in
Parenting.
Fathers and mothers have a primary responsibility to care for the
physical, emotional, social and spiritual development of their children.
Each of us plays an important role in the life of the child. The Christian
couple is free to work out their own particular pattern of
responsibilities within the home. The Biblical pattern does not preclude
the wife working outside the home. But the question is: How does this
affect my children and my marriage?
The physical role of the mother in childbearing and nurturing is basic,
but the child needs also the warm emotional involvement of the father. The
teaching and training of children cannot be delegated to the mother
exclusively. Many Christian fathers have made this fatal mistake.
Husbands and wives are members of a team and must function as
teammates. Who will play which position is to be worked out in keeping
with our talents, and interests. But both of us must go beyond what feels
comfortable. Parenting requires discipline and discipline means I do it
because it needs to be done.
