What
Is the Best Way to Help a Child?
When their grown children get in trouble, parents
often feel bound to help. Like the Energizer bunny who keeps going and
going and going, we may keep giving and giving and giving. But unlike the
rabbit, we may soon find our energy reserves drained. Wise parents
recognize that physical, emotional, and financial resources always have
limits.
The most common problem in parenting your adult
child is to overreact to a crisis in the child's life. Parents may rush to
the rescue, spend all of their resources, only to find that six months
later they are embroiled in yet another crises.
The question to ask is: What is the best way to help
our child? Ask for the advice of pastors, and friends. Don't jump
into action until you have a game plan. Find out about alcoholism before
you try to help an alcoholic child. Doing your homework will make your
efforts more effective. Having the same game plan and supporting each
other will also keep your marriage healthy.
