Benefits of Your Own
Personal Needs.
Do not allow your children's problems to keep you
from the essentials for staying physically and emotionally healthy. You
cannot ignore your own emotional needs and still expect to give continued
help to your children over the long haul.
For example, you own need for love requires that you
spend time enriching your marriage. Your need for order and structure
means that you will set boundaries both on yourself and your children.
Your need for recreation and relaxation is fully as important as your need
to help your children.
One mother said, "I do water aerobics three
times a week. If I didn't, I could not continue to help my son and his
wife as they cope with the trauma of his cancer." Some parents feel
guilty enjoying themselves when their children are in painful crises.
However, becoming emotionally obsessed with the problems of adult children
can bring one to a point of exhaustion.
Watch out for your spouses emotional health. Take
care of each other so that you can continue to minister to your adult
child. Keeping your marriage strong is one of the best things you can do
for your children.
