Myth
#2 - People Cannot Change.
Have you heard this one: People cannot change. Those
who believe this myth reason that if their spouse was sexually active with
multiple partners before marriage they cannot change after marriage. Thus
they are suspicious and often accusing. If a spouse has mismanaged money
for four years, they will never change. Thus they want to get out of the
marriage.
This myth fails to reckon with the reality of human
freedom and the power of God. History is filled with accounts of people
who have made radical changes in their behavior. From St. Augustine, who
once lived for pleasure and thought his desires were inescapable, to
Charles Colson, the Watergate criminal who repented and began an
international agency to offer prisoners spiritual help, the record is
clear - people can and do change, and often the changes are dramatic.
Don't give up on yourself, and don't give up on your
spouse. Change is possible. God is a life changing God. The greatest
sinners often make the greatest saints. Begin with prayer and believe that
God can and will change you and your spouse.
