Sin Always Separates.
She was sitting in my office crying, "I just don't
understand it. Before marriage, I felt so close to him. We shared
everything. He was so kind and tender and understanding. He wrote me poems
and gave me flowers, but now all of that is gone. I just don't know him
anymore. We seem so far apart. I know he must be as miserable as I am."
What happened in this marriage? Obviously intimacy
evaporated, but why? The answer is as old as the garden of Eden. When Adam
and Eve sinned they lost their intimacy. They put on fig leaves and
started blaming each other. Sin always separates.
When I fail to love my wife, I sin against her. When
she fails to love me she sins against me. Distance is immediate and
intimacy is gone. Confession of sin to God and each other is necessary if
intimacy is to return. Keeping the wall down allows intimacy to grow.
