Talking
Avoids Systematic Failure.
You may have seen the T-shirt that says, "It's
not an empty nest until they get their stuff out of the attic." For
some of you that may not seem even remotely funny. You aren't thinking
about emptying the attic, but about how you are going to manage when your
child moves back into your house and life.
As one father said: "After they finished
college, we thought our parenting days were essentially over, but were we
ever wrong! Our son took temporary jobs and lived with friends for nearly
a year, while he was looking for a position related to his field of study.
When that didn't happen, he became discouraged and asked if he could move
back home."
The mother continued: "What could we say? He
just wasn't making it out there?" The answer to that question is:
"You could say plenty and you should. If your adult child is going to
move back home you need to do a lot of talking beforehand. Talking now is
the best way to avoid fighting later."
